If you live on Little Hickory Island, you have been drawing the blinds after dark since May. You will be drawing them for another six and a half weeks. That is the part of October nobody puts on a calendar, and this year it matters more than usual, because almost everything else the month normally hands back to Bonita Springs is still behind construction fencing three miles inland.
Here is the thing worth knowing before the snowbirds land: this October, the barrier island is the only part of Bonita Springs running on schedule. Downtown's reopening dates all say winter. Midtown's say later this year, or 2027, depending who you ask. Meanwhile the island's month is governed by three fixed dates set by a state agency, a volunteer nonprofit, and a Lions Club produce market. None of them are going to slip.
Three Dates, None of Them on a City Calendar

Three weeks apart, near enough. Each one changes a different part of the week: your Saturday morning, your Thursday dinner, and what you do with the lamp in the second-story bedroom.
The Last Six Weeks of the Lighting Window Are the Ones That Count
Florida's nesting season runs May 1 through October 31, and the back end of it is the hatching end. The nests laid in July are the ones emerging now.
Bonita Beach is monitored by Turtle Time, Inc., the nonprofit founded and run by Eve Haverfield, whose volunteers walk the coastline from the northern tip of Fort Myers Beach south to the Lee-Collier county line, plus Bunche Beach. Bonita Beach is counted as its own segment, stopping at the county line, and it does not behave like the beaches on either side of it.
The number that should stop a Hickory Boulevard homeowner is this one, from Turtle Time's post-season debrief reported by Florida Weekly: Bonita Beach recorded 17 disoriented nests in the most recent season Turtle Time has publicly reported.
"Unfortunately, we had 17 nests disoriented on Bonita Beach," said Eve Haverfield, founder and president of Turtle Time.
That figure only means something next to its neighbor. In the same reporting, Collier County posted its best hatching success on record. One county line south, the same species, the same Gulf, a different outcome. South Lee County had the region's worst disorientation record.
Haverfield's account of the cause is not what most owners assume. She points at interior lights, undrawn curtains, and large picture windows, not at the beachfront fixtures everyone already knows to shield. A hatchling orients toward the brightest horizon it can see. A reading lamp burning behind a second-floor slider on the inland side of Hickory Boulevard is, from six inches above the sand, a horizon.
The practical version, for the next six weeks: shield or shut off anything visible from the beach after dark, use designated dune crossovers rather than cutting over the berm, and keep beach furniture off the sand overnight. The City of Bonita Springs enforces its beachfront lighting rules with fines. On November 1, the constraint lifts. Not before.
October 15 Changes the Menu Before It Changes the Dining Room
Stone crab season opens Thursday, October 15, and runs through May 1, closing May 2. That end date is newer than most people realize. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission shortened the season in 2020, moving the close from May 15 to May 1 to give the crabs more time to regenerate claws. What used to be a 32-week season is now a 28-week one, which is a meaningful thing to know if you have ever assumed there was time in mid-May.
If you set your own traps off Big Hickory Pass, the FWC rules for the recreational season are specific:
- Minimum claw size is 2 7/8 inches, measured elbow to tip
- Five traps per person, each with an unobstructed 2 3/16-inch escape ring in a vertical exterior wall
- Free annual trap registration is required for anyone 16 and older at GoOutdoorsFlorida.com, including people otherwise exempt from a fishing license
- Daily bag limit is one gallon of claws per person or two gallons per vessel, whichever is less
- No claws from egg-bearing crabs, and pull traps you are not fishing
For everyone else, the claws simply appear. Doc's Beach House at 27908 Hickory Boulevard sits on the sand at the public beach and has been the island's default for decades. Big Hickory Seafood Grille and Marina anchors the north end near the pass, next to the small free ramp at the base of the bridge where parking runs out fast on a good morning. East on Bonita Beach Road you have A Table Apart at 4295, and C Level and Bonito Bistro sharing 4450, with Backwater Jacks down at Bonita Bay Marina.
One timing note if you are reading this in mid-September: Sizzle Dining runs through September 30 and that roster includes A Table Apart, Acqua Bistecca, Backwater Jacks, Bonito Bistro, and C Level. Two weekends left on the prix fixe, then two weeks, then claws.
Saturday Morning Moves Back Across the Bridge
The Bonita Springs Farmers Market returns to the front parking lot of the Promenade at Bonita Bay on Saturday, October 3, running 8 a.m. to noon every Saturday through May. It is run by Local Roots and it is a true green market: produce, cut flowers, live plants, baked goods, seafood, honey, jams. Not a craft market, not the indoor flea market people sometimes confuse it with. Management has been known to correct that in public. There is a vendor wait list.
This is the single item on the October list that pulls island residents off the island and into eastbound Bonita Beach Road traffic on a weekend morning. Which brings us to the road.
The Corridor Fills In. The Intersection Doesn't.
Midtown at Bonita, the 68-acre Zuckerman Group project on Bonita Beach Road just off I-75, reached roughly 75 percent occupancy as of August 31, 2026, when the Business Observer reported that the family-owned Mediterranean restaurant Alea and a Starbucks had signed on. Alea brings the development's first outdoor bar. The roster already includes Airport Donuts, Bonita Beach Wine & Spirits, The Hangry Bison, Jeff's Bagel Run, LowBrow Pizza, Mason's Famous Lobster Rolls, TJ Maxx, and Ulta Beauty. The developer says the pedestrian-friendly retail portion starts opening later this year, though other regional coverage puts full opening in 2027. The 400-unit Paradiso apartments are already occupied.
More destinations on the road. Same intersection at the end of it.
FDOT's preferred alternative for US 41 at Bonita Beach Road is a partial displaced left-turn design, with northbound and southbound lefts crossing to the outside of opposing traffic so they can run simultaneously with through movements, plus a new northeast quadrant road connecting US 41 to Arroyal Road and 12-foot shared-use paths at all four approaches. Design money was programmed for fiscal 2026. Right-of-way and construction are unfunded, and Lee County MPO materials reviewed in late 2025 list the intersection improvement at 2041. Anyone waiting on that fix before season should plan on Old 41 instead.
What Isn't Reopening in Time
Riverside Park has been closed since April for Phase 2, reopening only briefly for Star Spangled Bonita on July 4. The rebuild is real: synthetic turf event lawn, permanent performance stage, bandshell improvements, expanded paved seating, wider walkways for vendors, added parking. The city's downtown projects page targets completion by winter 2026, while the parks department page currently lists the bandshell reopening as late fall. The Banyan Lot splash pad, with lighting and a restroom building, is also aimed at winter. The city has told event organizers outright to explore alternative venues and shared parking with nearby businesses in the meantime.
October 31 falls on a Saturday this year. Before you assume the usual downtown Halloween routine is on, check where it is actually being held.
Downtown dining did not pause for any of this. Wichcraft Gourmet Sandwiches opened in Entrada Plaza in April 2026 from Caitlin Emery-Schewe and Brandon Schewe, the couple behind The Bohemian and Downtown Coffee & Wine. Their third venture, Canary Club, landed on Gulfshore Life's 2026 Best New Restaurants list for three-day-fermented sourdough turned into both pizza and pita. Hide•A•Wai, the open-air rum and fresh-pressed mojito bar from Ben and Alex Voss of Alligator Bay Distillers, is still in build-out across from Benson's Grocery, with sugarcane sourced from Farmer Mike's U-Pick. HoneyHole Downtown, from the SugarShack owner, is expected in early 2027.
Why the Island Keeps Time Better Than the Mainland
The pattern holds all the way down to the sand. The 0.8-mile stretch at the north end of Little Hickory Island is classified as critically eroded, and the nourishment that maintains it is cost-shared by the City of Bonita Springs, local property owners, and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, with two groins at the north end anchoring the fill against losses into Big Hickory Pass. Even the beach width you walk on is a scheduled, funded, jointly managed thing.
That is the real character of this address. Downtown is being rebuilt on a timeline that moves. The corridor is filling in on a timeline that moves. The island runs on permit conditions, nesting windows, harvest seasons, and renourishment agreements, and those do not move. Owning here means living inside a calendar somebody else already set, which is either the most annoying thing about it or the most reassuring, depending on the week.
Six and a half weeks of blinds. Then the lights come back on.
